A Ride in the Sky

Materials | Video and mixed media installation

A Ride in the Sky conflates Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers dance sequences, which invoke nostalgia for the past, with an idiosyncratic 1970s song entitled Jet by Paul McCartney and Wings, which underscores both the allure and the folly of romanticising the myth of the American Dream. This mash-up is part of a physical set or ‘stage’. It invites viewers to negotiate the line between literal and pictorial space, and to actively participate in the constructed reality of the work.

Carol Warner's bio:

Carol Warner lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

My work examines how photography both represents and shapes social, cultural and personal expectations. It is a synthesis of diverse media including photography, drawing and sculptural materials. Working with symbols of comfort and prosperity, I combine lens-based imagery with objects from the home, such as laminate flooring, rugs, furniture, and shelving, extending the pictorial space into physical space. My goal is to create a space representative of the American Dream, in which all are welcome.
