Emma Syme
My passion and responsibility for continuing Wiradjuri culture and keeping it strong means that I spend intense, spiritual time on Country. My art practice is a response to my environment and I particularly like using timber to create traditional and contemporary cultural items. Caring for Country is a priority and it takes time to select culturally appropriate trees and seasons to make coolamon, digging and walking sticks. I make clapsticks to use in my song performances. I hope to promote the beauty and value of this land and inspire others to learn how to care for and appreciate Aboriginal ways.
My art practice is a part of my Aboriginal identity and respecting Country. These connections are ancient and deep.
