The Spirit of ‘21 is the ghost of what we have lost and the spirit of what remains. It is gone, still here, past away and alive, it is anxious and undaunted, it is dematerialised and undiminished.

It is our sorrow and resilience, the exuberance of fear, our ability to laugh and to play, to love and to hope, to dream and create all of which is to risk ourselves, to lose because loss marks the value of what we have. It is the spirit that spans the distances and differences that separate us.

Kath Fries | Walkdown in Lockdown

For many of us in lockdown, walking has become the highlight of the day and one of the few excuses to go outside. Going for a walk has become a privilege and our appreciation of this simple freedom has grown accordingly. Walking is an act of touching the Earth, a series of rhythmic repeated acts connecting your body to the ground. Each breath brings the world, and the present moment, into your body, and then it releases the body back into the world in a continuous cycle of exchange. To walk mindfully rather than rushing from one place to another, is to walk meditatively, opening your awareness to the metabolism that exists between yourself and your surroundings.

You are invited to join artist Kath Fries on a collective act of meditative walking practice. Kath will guide you through an experience of mindful walking, coaching you to focus your thoughts and embodied attention. Along with a cohort of fellow travellers – each in their own world, breath, footfalls and body’s momentum – you will be moving across the ground in front of you and through the air around you. This movement is not just the mind slowing down to meet the body, but the body also moving to meet the mind. The process of being attentive to your breathing and walking allows each step to connect you to the Earth.

Trevor Brown | Dronescape<>WAYOUT

Dronescape <>WAYOUT is a microtonal, surround sound performance, that engages with the WAYOUT artSpace in Kandos - a beautiful old-style community hall with solid wooden floors and its specific resonances. For SPiRiT of ’21 Dronescape <WAYOUT> will be presented as a final offering as the festival comes to a close. An aural experience that connects us all as we step away from our screens and turn up the volume.

Dronescape responsively places tones from live instruments 18° apart as ten individually placed speakers or in a stereo field. WAYOUT became a giant speaker box, while Brown made the whole space to sing, hum, vibrate and resonate.

In this performance, the tones are generated in real-time by woodwind instruments and then frozen.

Flute Alto Flute Soprano Sax Alto Sax Baritone Sax Clarinet Bass Clarinet

The performer acts like a giant analogue synthesiser. Each instrument has a character, the clarinets are sine waves, the saxophones and flutes are square waves while the breath is various types of white, brown or pink noise. The harmonics and flexibilities are available organically through these instruments, engaging the performer’s lungs, lips, and physicality allowing deep micro tuning and sonic colouration.

The microtones positioned in the space, create pockets of harmonics, interferences, beats and resonances, as Brown engages with the space, and spaces within the spaces: the performer’s lung cavity, the column of air manipulated inside the instrument and the space itself.

For those in the artSpace during the recording, the work acted, not just as an aural experience, but also as a physical, vibrational experience.

It was recorded with a pair of Rode TS-5 in stereo ORTF configuration from the opposite end of the hall from speakers. Recorded at 96kHz 32Bit

Tina Stefanou | The Longest Hum

The Longest Hum is a participatory vocal work, conceived by Tina Stefanou, to create the world’s longest collective hum.

The hum is a gentle, musically democratic and direct way to interact with both human and the more-than-human. Hums are utterances found in the voice of humans, machines, and non-human species, as well as sonic artefacts found within the botanical world, and planetary rotation. It is an utterance that challenges the logical isolation of the English language – it is pre-speech, subterranean, pre-linguistic, pre-enunciative and within it exists pure potential. It acts as a conduit between sound relationships that connect the human experience to sounds found outside of it. Creating a living, resonating web, this work will communicate a sonic experience of location and connectedness for participants.

We love your hums; all you need to do is record it on your phone and uploaded to our soon-to-be web platform. The hum can be from your voice, or the voice of your fridge, dog or thunderstorm. This will then enter a collective hum which will run and stretch for 21 years. Why 21 years you might ask? Honouring The Spirit of ‘21 and an affirmative hope for the future, we are creating a real time - time capsule full of curiosity and thick relational webs, as we head further into all sorts of changes. What will we sound like in 21 years? How will technology develop? How will we re-tell stories of hum’s past? Can’t wait to hum to with you! Love, Tina

Ivey Wawn | In Perpetuity

SPiRiT of ‘21 is pleased to present the first of Ivey Wawn’s two channel video of In Perpetuity. The second channel video will be presented the weekend after at Carriagework’s online festival. This cross-organisational online offering is very much within the Spirit of ‘21, as artists negotiate and adapt to the ever-shifting digital art world.

In Perpetuity is about the connections between sensation, memory and desire. Capitalist labour processes enforce on us a violent rhythmic structure that cuts us off from our spontaneous and embodied connections to the world and to ourselves. In Perpetuity proposes some approaches for attuning to sensation, through touch, action and memory, suggesting that the act of dancing might just be a source of magic for a people condemned to a life of work.

Lead artist: Ivey Wawn, Performance: Zachary Lopez, Niki Verrall and Ivey Wawn, Director/Editor: Hyun Lee, Cinematography: Dimitri Zaunders, First Assistant: Trudi Gultom, Costume: Verity Mackey with Runner: Mark Mailler.
