Susie Anderson & Jannah Quill
Susie Anderson writes to uncover what landscapes remember. Informed by her Wergaia and Wemba Wemba heritage, her work navigates identity, time, and the quiet repair of cultural connection. She has worked in digital production for museums and galleries in both Sydney and Melbourne, and her practice often manifests as ekphrasis–poems in response to artwork, in particular First Nations art and artists, or as interventions into long-held colonial narratives of place. Jannah’s creative practice is interested in the behaviour of electricity in natural and built systems. Her music compositions are shaped at the intersection of computer music and modular synthesis; a conversation between physical signals and digital emulation or expansion. She creates audio visual systems to forefront the material synergy between sound and light. This technical practice is underpinned by deep listening and intuitive response between herself and the machine (or system), with a consideration of how this relates to feminine technological histories.
signals is a sonic experience and a suggestion of how to listen to Place. As sound-based and text-based artists respectively, Jannah Quill and Susie Anderson spent their Cementa residency receiving signals from Kandos and Country. Through poetic instructions and ambisonic recordings, signals translates the stories, conversations, feelings and sounds they gathered into a participatory audio walk for audiences to listen to across the festival weekend. This immersive soundscape leads listeners through points of interest in town, culminating in a reflective pause under the foot of Combamalong Mountain. A self-guided experience with maps available, you can undertake the walk in solitude, or take part in one of two “appointments” throughout the festival with Susie and Jannah leading the walk. Use QR code to download the signals map from the Cementa website, bring headphones to listen on your own device at any time, or join a guided walk and enjoy this collective, deep listening experience rooted in place.
