Kim Williams & Lucas Ihlein
Artists Kim Williams and Lucas Ihlein collaborate on socially engaged art and environmental projects. Community engagement and participation are central to their work, which fosters an appreciation of systems through research, consultation, design, making, and participatory events. The duo have led large-scale multi-disciplinary collaborations, bridging industry and community stakeholders to tackle complex environmental problems. Recent projects have explored regenerative agriculture in the canefields of Queensland, environmental practices in arts organisations, and urban waterways. Williams and Ihlein use whatever tricks they have in their artistic toolkit to create fun, engaging participatory experiences for audiences.
The appearance of The Turdis at Cementa26 is supported by a Research Grant from the Faculty of Arts Society and Business at University of Wollongong.
The POOTOPIAN MANIFESTO celebrates the craft of “humanure” composting to create high-quality organic soil. THE TURDIS – hot pink portable composting toilet – provides a V.I.Poo toileting experience for festival goers, who get paid for their contributions in our bespoke currency, SHITCOIN. The Pootopia! “salon” nearby is a site for participatory workshops, singing and friendly chats, where guests can shoot the shit about the environmental benefits of humanure, and share endless poo jokes.
