Joel Tonks
Joel Tonks’ multifaceted practice explores the intersection between art, science, and everyday life. Discovery and observation are recurring threads in Tonks’ artworks, whether it be the classification and taxonomy of the natural world, or interaction of virtual and physical worlds. His recent interactive artworks investigate historical stories, the communication of knowledge, and play.
Inspired by Kandos histories, people, biodiversity, and its position as a gateway to the Wollemi National Park, the artworks will bring to life elements of the town and surrounding nature in the form of holographic apparitions.
My practice aims to show art and science as two sides of the same coin. Art is loose science, science is precise art. Both are concerned with the pursuit of understanding.
