Joel Tonks is an Australian visual artist currently based in Orange NSW. During his study at the University of Wollongong, he began experimenting with interaction deign, electronics and coding. Graduating in 2014 with a Bachelor of Creative Arts Honours, Joel has worked as an art technician, curator and artist, expanding his practice to include painting, ceramics and film photography.
Joel Tonks’ multifaceted practice explores the intersection between art, science, and everyday life. Discovery and observation are recurring threads in Tonks’ artworks, whether it be the classification and taxonomy of the natural world, or interaction of virtual and physical worlds. His recent interactive artworks investigate historical stories, the communication of knowledge, and play.
