Michael Bourke was born in Sydney in 1971. He spent his childhood watching Happy Days and eating Choo Choo Bars. For a while, he toyed with the idea of becoming a world-famous rock and roll star or a postman. With no musical talent and a tendency to fall off his bike, Michael was forced to stay at school for a very long time. At some stage, he was told that it would be okay if he “stood at the front of the room and pretended to know what was going on”. Appalled by the lack of marsupials living in his Marrickville apartment, Michael moved to Mudgee in 2001 and immediately made friends with a number of kangaroos. When not majestically bouncing through the swaying grass, Michael can be seen painting pictures or teaching classes at the Mudgee Arts Precinct.
I find life quite beautiful but also very sad and confusing. Painting pictures helps me to notice the beauty. It helps me to think through the confusion. It helps me to find comfort in the inevitable sadness. I don’t really know what I’m doing. I think that’s the point.
