With a total of 34 solo exhibitions since 1981, Terry Burrows has exhibited in private and public galleries both nationally and internationally. More recently he completed the series of photographs Banaras Backs in Varanasi, India. Accompanied by a major photographic publication The Banaras Back Book, this series was exhibited at Kriti Gallery in Varanasi in 2013, the Lalit Kala Akademi in Delhi and the Australian Centre for Photography in Sydney in 2014, and the RMIT Gallery in Melbourne in 2015. Bathurst Regional Art Gallery will be presenting a survey exhibition of Burrows’s work in 2018.
Terry Burrows’s semi-abstract imagery often alludes to the interrelationships between the human figure and object-like forms. In his primary practice of paintings and drawings these relationships intentionally remain ambiguous and manifest as ‘unnamed things’ or ‘formless forms’. His work occasionally encompasses video and photomedia, through which these relationships are explored in a more literal manner representative of the iconic or arcane nature of his subjects/objects. His Cementa17 project will be addressing the fact that he is a recent refugee from the city and now calls Kandos home. Perhaps becoming himself, both subject and object.
