Tessa Leong will collaborate with award-winning theatre company PYT Fairfield to present SWIMMING POOL, a site-specific performance at Kandos Pool, as part of Cementa19.
Tessa is a founding member of Adelaide-based theatre company isthisyours?. She was the Associate Artist at Belvoir in 2017, and a studio artist at Griffin Theatre in 2014 as well as a recipient of the Seminaire en Avignon artist program at the renowned Avignon Festival. Over the past five years, she has been selected in Australia and internationally to participate in, speak at, and run workshops for multiple residency and conference programs. Tessa has worked with many companies as Director, Dramaturg, Researcher and Assistant Director including Belvoir, Sydney Theatre Company, State Theatre Company of SA, Country Arts SA, Ontroerend Goed, Force Majeure, Vitalstatistix, Drop Bear Theatre and Restless Dance as well as many independent artists across Australia, Europe and North America. Her love of new plays, participatory performance and live art sees her collaborating with PYT Fairfield, Contemporary Asian Australian Performance and artists from varying disciplines. She has just returned from the Prague Quadrennial and Berlin Performing Arts Festival for her work with other collaborating artists for The Hole and an organic blackcurrant and cattle farm in Ontario where she was on an arts residence at Lore.
Tessa makes theatre and performance to pose questions about how we see the world and interact with each other. She likes to question assumptions we have of other people, of place, of stories, of histories and dream up new possibilities. Her work in found spaces, traditional theatres and on the main streets of regional towns has inspired her to connect deeper with her surroundings, and talk longer with her artist and non-artist collaborators. Cementa 2019 gives her the opportunity to visit Kandos for the first time.
